Shimna Integrated College

NUGENT are pleased to announced that Shimna Integrated College has opened its doors to pupils, staff and the wider community. The new £19 million college located in Newcastle, Co. Down has replaced the previous Post Primary school with state-of-the-art facilities.

With Glasgiven Contracts as Main Contractors, Shimna Integrated College spans 10,000m2 and across three storeys. The all new inclusive college now delivers modern, energy efficient facilities teaching 620 pupils of all abilities in the heart of the natural beauty of Mourne Mountains.

Digital Construction aided the success of this project. BIM is the process of constructing intelligent 3D models of buildings which improves the delivery and construction process of our heavily serviced BIM projects.  The project entailed a collaborative approach with the Main Contractor and Sub-Contractors, this was achieved through design and site progress meetings throughout the duration of the project.

Our in-house OSM (Offsite Manufacturing) was also a key benefit to the delivery of this project. OSM generates less emissions compared to conventional construction methods with overall massive reductions in greenhouse gases.

Our Mechanical services included but were not limited to:

• Ventilation to all classrooms by mechanical heat recovery units
• Natural ventilation to the halls & gym via windcatchers
• Local extract ventilation to toilets & kitchens
• Central air handling plant serving the kitchen
• Central gas fired boiler installation
• Central domestic how water calorifiers
• Underfloor heating throughout
• Domestic and sanitary public health installations
• Rainwater harvesting system utilised to supply recycled water for flushing to all the toilets
• Laboratory gas, compressed air and Oxy/Acetylene installation
• Local fume extraction within manufacturing department
• Mobile re-circulating fume cupboards for science rooms
• Central Building Management System to ensure efficient operation of all building services systems
