Tops Tips for A-Level & AS-Level Results Day

Ahead of AS and A-Level results we asked our MEP Technical Assistant, Ciaran Daly a few questions about his career journey so far as he undertakes his placement year with our Contracts Department.

Ciaran, tell us a bit about your background?

I am from Trillick in County Tyrone and I went to Omagh CBS. I studied Mathematics, Geography and Construction for A-Levels and I am currently studying BEng Architectural Engineering at Ulster University, Belfast. I am currently undertaking my placement year with NUGENT in the Pomeroy office, and really enjoying it so far.

What made you choose your course?

With the construction industry changing rapidly towards sustainability and renewable energy, this made the course very relevant. The course covered a lot of aspects from the mechanical and electrical sector, has modules in software such as Revit and AutoCAD, and covered the renewable side of things such as solar and biofuels etc. This interested me and has given me a head start when starting my placement year.

Tell us a bit about your role so far with NUGENT?

Already in my short time at NUGENT, I have covered a wide range of tasks in many different projects. I produce and make changes in drawings and mark ups, use software like AutoCAD, Revit and Procore and work with colleagues and external companies to design the layout of the buildings being designed. I also work closely with Contracts Managers in designing and producing plans for newbuilds and renovations.

If you could provide any advice to individuals for results day / picking their courses, what would it be?

The advice I would have for students picking their courses, is to look at all the options, not just university courses and pick a course that you will enjoy. If you’re enjoying what you do your job won’t feel like work. I would also recommend researching what your course is and what you will be doing so you fully understand what you are getting into. Finally, no matter what results you get, there are always other options and other paths to explore.

BIM Technician, Tony said, “Ciaran is an exceptional young gent, he is eager to learn and has a great interest in the multiple software’s we use within the Digital Construction team. Ciaran has been a fantastic addition to the team, we look forward to helping him develop his skills further throughout his placement year”.

Good luck to everyone receiving their results from the NUGENT Team!
