National Apprentice Week – Meet Patrick

National Apprenticeship Week  Monday 6th February – Sunday 12th February

Apprenticeships are an incredible route for students to learn through a hands on learning experience alongside a highly qualified mentor.

We will be highlighting a few of our teams stories this week to encourage students who are considering the apprenticeship route.

Meet Patrick Nugent our Mechanical Apprentice who joined the NUGENT team in September 2022

Patrick, tell us a bit about yourself

I studied at St Patrick’s high school in Keady. I took an interest to pursue a career within the Plumbing industry in lower 6th which was two years before I started my apprenticeship. I am currently studying at SRC Newry Greenback where I am undertaking a four year Plumbing and Heating course. I attend SRC once a week on a Monday and I am on site for remaining four days.

What made you choose NUGENT for your apprenticeship?

I choose NUGENT for my apprenticeship as they are one of the largest Plumbing firms in Northern Ireland with a variety of projects within multiple sectors from Health, Education, Hotels and more. As I have great interest in the Plumbing industry this would be a great opportunity to attend multiple sites and carry out various tasks. The team at NUGENT are well looked after, and I really wanted to join a company for my apprenticeship which I could continue my career with when I am qualified.

Do you enjoy the apprenticeship route so far and would you recommend the apprenticeship path to other students?

I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship route so far I think it’s a fantastic way to learn the trade and become qualified at the end of it. I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship route to other students.

On a daily basis, what are your day-to-day tasks?

Each day is different on site and it is hard to say I’ll be doing the same thing over and over again but, on a daily basis to name a few tasks; I would be making a series of clips and brackets and hang them from the ceiling. I would also be threading black iron in order to put a fitting on to the end of this. It is an enjoyable job as you get to learn from your supervisor with the hands on experience of being on site.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

In 5 years time, I see myself fully qualified as a Plumber and still working for NUGENT.
