Meet Mitchell our MEP Placement Student

At NUGENT we are passionate about students joining our team to begin their career journey.

Meet Mitchell, our MEP placement student for the Summer. We asked Mitchell a few questions about his 3 month placement alongside our MEP Pre-Construction team. Since returning to the South Eastern Regional College in September, Mitchell has continued to stay with NUGENT part time during his studies, which is fantastic to see.

Mitchell, what course are you currently studying?

I am currently studying a HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering at the South Eastern Regional College in Bangor.

What made you choose your current course?

I originally never had any interest in engineering and studied in IT for 4 years before deciding that it wasn’t the career path for me. What led me to making a change over to electrical engineering is that I really enjoyed the physical components aspect of IT with managing the motherboards and overall power supply. Another factor is that my dad works as an estimator and I helped him out with his work for some time, during which I would work on building schematics, electrical layouts and more. After working with my father for 2 years I decided to go back into education and decided to make the jump over to engineering and enrolled into the HNC/HND. Even though so far, I’ve only been studying for 1 year I have enjoyed studying engineering far more than I did IT and am confident this is the career path I wish to take.

What made you choose NUGENT for your Summer placement?

As mentioned, my dad works as an estimator and while helping him with work, I’ve become acquainted with many different engineering companies. I decided that I wanted to get out and try working in an engineering field to see how I would like it. The field I chose was MEP design, so I identified the companies that I’d encountered through work and researching to find which one’s I’d like to work for. This is how I found NUGENT and discovered they had a great reputation, and this would allow me to get hands on experience and see if MEP was a field that I would be interested in.

Tell us a bit about your typical duties in a day and what you have learned?

A typical day for me would be working on many different projects from nursing homes to film studios. I usually work on RCPs, electrical service schematics, building ventilation and plumbing. Despite studying and being electrically inclined, I have really enjoyed working on the mechanical jobs as this allowed me to learn more. A main aspect that I have enjoyed is how different each of the jobs are, the work is very enjoyable and not repetitive.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

As of now I see myself having completed my studies and progressing to a job in MEP design as I have found myself enjoying the field.

What advice would you give someone considering a Summer placement?

I would say go for it. It is a great chance for gaining experience and finding what field of work is for you and there is nothing to lose from trying it.

MEP Design Manager, Declan Murray was one of Mitchell’s mentor for the duration of his 3 month placement. Declan said, “Mitchell is an intelligent gent who enjoys a challenge, having an IT and Electrical background, he was very intrigued by the Mechanical elements and worked on both elements during his time with the team. His enthusiasm to learn is very inspirational at a young age and we are delighted he will be returning to the team during his studies”.

If you would like us keep you in mind for any relevant new roles that become available and match your skills and experience, please send your latest CV to hr@nugent.com.
